Skin and Smoke

She touched my restless soul

And made the broken pieces whole.

A moment thick and slow

Like sinking through the sand below.

Her golden brown hair fell

Like autumn casting its warm spell.

Her frame was tall and thin

A quiet fire that burned within.

The ink along her arm

Told stories etched in sacred harm.

From elbow up to bone

A sleeve of skin she’d made her own.

She smiled and something broke

A wall I’d built of ash and smoke.

Before a word was born

I felt the veil between us torn.

I never said her name

But something in me knew the flame.

A whisper filled my chest

And nothing ever let me rest.
